words for when you can't find the words
Sometimes we cannot find the words for the moments that leave us speechless.
Or brokenhearted.
Or wondering.
Or struggling.
Here are a few poems for when you can’t find the words . . .
HOLD ON
and on those days when nothing seems to be going right
. . . hold on.
and in those moments when life feels hopeless
. . . hold on.
and during those seasons of storms and uncertainty
. . . hold on.
and just like yesterday and the day before
I need to trust and breathe and
. . . hold on.
YOUR REMINDER
and this is your reminder
to breathe
and this is your reminder
to let go
and this is your reminder
to rest
and this is your reminder
to trust
and this is your reminder
to keep going
THROUGH IT ALL
There is a thread of grace that runs through it all.
It’s woven through my past and paving the roads ahead.
It whispers into the silence and is felt in the chaos.
It’s written between lines,
carved beneath the bark,
and burns bright with a single spark.
And when I think it isn’t there,
I take a step back;
squint my eyes like I’m staring into the sun and I see.
It’s there.
It’s always been there.
Grace found us from the start.
And I’m beginning to believe it doesn’t plan to leave.
BLOOMING
I wonder what is happening that I cannot see.
Something below the surface or beyond the horizon or between the questions and answers.
A spark, a whisper, a prayer.
And today I don’t need to know what, I just want to trust that something more is happening.
To let go and remember the beauty of becoming, the joy of blooming.
Trusting that small faithful steps lead us further than we could ever dream or imagine.
And I imagine I'll continue to dream about what is happening that I cannot yet see.
A hope, a moment, a breakthrough.
PATIENCE
By now, the sun isn’t far from climbing over the horizon.
I know this because of yesterday and the day before and the day before . . .
Soon the darkness will be pushed to the other side of the world
where they are beginning to say goodbye to today.
And soon, just like yesterday,
my shadow will move my eyes to the sky to see the beauty of the sunlight.
The cold of night will be replaced with the warmth of a new day,
reminiscent of the words, “I forgive you.”
And today, I’ll give yesterday to the past
and let this be the present.
Whatever today brings,
whether silence or noise,
hopes or fears,
celebrations or tears,
I’ll be here.
And soon the moon will arrive,
bringing back the darkness and removing the light.
Just like yesterday and the day before and the day before . . .
But for now, light is on the way.
Light is always on the way.
