What’s Happening Out There?

Have you thought about what’s happening out there?

Somewhere they are standing beneath the rain screaming and dancing without a care.

Right now someone is giving themselves a pep talk, looking in the mirror calling themselves Beyonce, telling their negative thoughts to go ahead and get gone, You must not know about me reminding themselves they are irreplaceable and that life will get better in a minute.

Somewhere, even right now, someone is thinking of you and your smile and the way you do that thing only the way you do it.

Out there someone is being brave by leaving or staying, giving or taking, saying yes or no or I don’t know.

Somewhere they are gathered together, holding hands, wiping tears, beginning a new chapter as they say and I love you and goodbye to the one whose voice they first heard when they arrived, hearing, “Hello, I will love you forever.”

And somewhere there is someone making coffee. They are measuring and waiting before pouring hot coffee into their favorite mug, the one they use day after day, the one that makes them somehow feel more like themselves, the one that holds them up as much as they hold it.

Somewhere today someone realized it’s called a scarecrow because they scare crows.

Out there, there is tossing and turning, stop and go traffic, breakups and engagements, shooting stars and conversations about curfew.

Right now there are fist bumps and awkward hugs and memes being shared, connections being created, and children asking why.

Children are always asking why.

Why are you talking to yourself in the mirror?

Why is it called a scarecrow?

Why is there death?

Why do you drink coffee out of the same mug everyday?

With hope,
