the unknown.

I’ve been waking up early to watch the endless night fade to morning.

The darkness is as blinding as the glow of light.

I can’t see what’s happening and that feels true for the past 40 days.

Night reminds me I don’t need to see everything always. It also reminds me the light will arrive.

In time, the light will arrive.

I don’t enjoy the darkness, but it helps me appreciate what is to come.

And what is to come continues to remind me:
this is not the end.

And slowly, like an answer to prayer, the stars pull themselves back and push the sun forward. God’s big thumb and pointer finger twist the dial to the right as the night fades to light.

And I am still mesmerized by the mystery of such intricate beauty.

The sun slips through the breaks in the branches, pushing darkness aside.

The ground reveals itself slowly like a mother gently waking her child.

Mercy silently shouts a message of hope, welcoming us to another new day.

The birds begin to sing a song of celebration and I can hear them say to one another,
I survived the darkness.
I am in the light.

And I say to myself with an exhaled breath,
I’m going to be alright.
I survived the darkness.
I am in the light.

.. .. ..

With hope,

Tanner Olson
